20th century, benchmade by Frank Auspitz Furniture, York, Pennsylvania, exaggerated serpentine crest rail, scrolled arms with rope molded terminals, sloped uprights, cabriole legs, ball and claw feet, turned stretchers, custom damask upholstery by Ernest Lo Nano, New York, 45-1/2 x 31 x 29 in.
Provenance: Collection of Anne H. and Frederick Vogel III
Note: This lolling chair was made by Frank Auspitz of York, Pennsylvania, who restored several pieces of furniture for Henry Francis du Pont that are now held in the permanent collection of the Winterthur Museum. During the restoration, Auspitz made careful measurements and exact drawings of each piece, which were later used to make this custom reproduction chair, likely after the circa 1755-1785 example in the Winterthur collection (acc. 1958.2138). The upholstery of the present lot was also completed by the same esteemed interior design firm used by du Pont for upholstery and curtains at Winterthur, Ernest S. Lo Nano of New York.
Ref.: Winterthur Museum Collections, acc. 1958.2138, "Chair (Armchair)."
retains good structural integrity, front upholstery with light wear and minor discolorations, back upholstery with fraying and wear at corners, discoloration in lower corners and oxidation to brass tacks, chair frame with minor abrasions and general wear from previous use
Collection of Anne H. and Frederick Vogel III
