Note:
Mary Madeline Nourse (Ohio, 1870-1959) was a painter, decorator, woodcarver, and craftsperson. She was the niece of internationally known artist, Elizabeth Nourse, and taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy in 1889. Beginning in 1891, she became known primarily for her work as a decorator for Rookwood Pottery Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she worked until 1905. She was known by her colleagues to be of good cheer, described in a poem about several Rookwood artists as “as jolly a maiden as Rookwood can show.” Like many other Rookwood decorators, Nourse utilized naturalistic motifs and images in her designs, often depicting various types of birds, trees, and flowers. Her art can be found in the collection of the Cincinnati Museum of Art, among others.
