Eisbahn/Festhalle-Frankfurt, circa 1909, signed in stone lower right "L.v. Schauroth", Kornsand & Co, Frankfurt, printer, rare color lithographic advertising/travel poster, 36-3/4 x 25-1/4 in.; metal frame, conservation acrylic, 37-1/4 x 25-1/2 in.
Note:This poster promoted the new indoor ice rink (or "eisbahn") in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The rink was held inside the Festhalle Messe in central Frankfurt, which continues to host thousands of international events to this day. When it opened in 1909, it was the largest exhibition dome in Europe and hosted various fairs and international shows with the capacity to accommodate up to 13,500 people. Its use in the early twentieth century as an indoor skating rink enabled visitors to enjoy skating on smooth, man-made ice as was done in Paris, Brussels, and other major European cities. Here the artist has chosen to use two couples pair skating side-by-side to represent the effortless elegance and social possibilities available at the Festhalle rink. Pair skating had just made its first appearance the year before at the February 1908 World Championships in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The couple in the foreground demonstrates the clean edging allowing the skater to move forward or backward in deep curves.
