(Ohio/Poland, 1928 - 2017)
Sharing Eight, 1974-75, signed verso "J. Stanczak 74-75" and signed and titled on stretcher, acrylic on canvas, 28-1/8 x 24-5/8 in.; metal frame, "1975 Ohio Arts Council Award", 28-3/4 x 24-3/4 in.
Note:Julian Stanczak, a Polish immigrant to America, received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his MFA from Yale University under the instruction of Josef Albers (1888-1976) and Conrad Relli (1913-2000). He painted highly technical paintings that were first exhibited at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York with the title “Julian Stanczak: Optical Paintings”. In a review of the exhibition in Arts magazine, Donald Judd, used the term to describe the exhibition as “Op Art”. This term came to define the movement. He also exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art’s important exhibition, “The Responsive Eye.”
Painting with his left hand after injuries that left his dominant hand useless, he created compositions with layers of color and line with the precision and intensity of a scientist.
The lot is accompanied by a facsimile of the Restrospective catalog, "Julian Stanczak: OP=Visual Poetics" and an extensive biography.

In house shipping. Brunk Auctions provides in-house shipping via UPS Ground (signature required) for many items. Brunk Auctions will provide a shipping quote which includes shipping, materials, labor and insurance. Insurance is based on the selling price and premium.

Shipping arrangements are made only after the invoice is paid. The payment for shipping is a separate charge from payment of your lots.
Sales Tax: If you live in North Carolina and/or pick up from the auction house, and do not have a valid resale tax number on file with us, you MUST pay North Carolina state sales tax. The NC Sales Tax will not apply to any items being shipped out of state (unless the client resides in North Carolina) or to those clients with a resale tax number.
