(American School, 19th century)
Balloon Descent on Kent Island, Chesapeake Bay--The Aeronaut thought to be John Wise, inscribed lower left "John Wise 18??", oil on canvas, 24 x 42 in.; reproduction gilt wood frame, 29 x 47 in.
Note: There is an intriguing bit of mystery to this painting involving the aviator and famous balloonist John Wise, and a little known 19th century American artist named John Wise. According to the consignor, this painting is known as Landing a Balloon on Lake Erie in a Storm, and was painted by the artist John Wise. As very little is known about the artist, but the aviator John Wise is the most famous balloonist of his day, I feel this painting is more likely to be of John Wise the balloonist, rather than a painting of a balloonist by the (little known) painter John Wise. Of course there is still the slight possibility that artist John Wise painted balloonist John Wise, but I don't believe we can know for sure. An interesting bit of added mystery is a charcoal drawing in the collection of The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts of the same scene. It references John Wise as the artist, with his known dates of 1808-1879. It appears to be a drawing for a print of the image . https://www.pafa.org/museum/collection/item/balloon-descent-kent-island-chesapeake-bay
