(New York, 1785-1851)
Scolopax minor, Plate CCLXVIII, 1835, from The Birds of America, London, 1827-1838, Havell edition, hand-colored etching, engraving and aquatint on wove paper with "J. Whatman/1835" watermark 14.5 x 20.5 in. platemark on uncut sheet, 25.5 x 38 in.
Provenance: By descent from noted early American artist Robert Weir (1803-1889), to son and artist Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919) and from thence to his daughter, artist Dorothy Weir Young (1890-1947)
Note: This work was framed for Dorothy Weir Young, daughter to Robert Weir with part of the wide margins folded over a wooden strainer, 22.25 x 27.5 inches. It was displayed in this manner at the Branchville, Connecticut summer home and studio of the Weir family (now Weir Farm National Historic Site) until the 1960s. Recently unframed and flattened by a paper conservator, the display portion of the work retains its original color and the paper is bright and clean, although there is light toning at the folds from the strainer and the portion of the margins beyond.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
