- Lot Description
Leather-Upholstered Side Chair designed by Josef Hoffmann, Vienna, Austria, 1903-1905, probably made at the Kohn workshops, steam-bent European beech, red leather seat with button banding, 39-1/4 x 17-1/4 x 17-1/2 in., some warping to rear stiles, scratches and abrasions to upholstery, some stains and finish losses to frame; chip to underside of one ball form return at seat frame. Notes: Exhibited: "A Thing of Beauty", High Museum, Atlanta, 1980. Published: "A Thing of Beauty" exhibition catalog No. F.9. Catalog notes: "This chair was designed by Hoffmann for the dining room of the Purkersdorf Sanitorium [Vienna] in about 1903-1905. It was probably made at the workshop of the Kohn factory, although he also designed furniture for the more well-known Thonet company". As icons of modern design, chairs from this suite have been widely published.. Provenance: A Private Atlanta Collection
