obverse engraved "M. WHITLOCK/CO. F/8TH TENN./V.C./ENL. APR 5TH/1863/AT/GREE. CO. TENN.", reverse [WAR OF 1861.] engraved "Nc.Sc.Ga./SCOTT/RAIDS/SIEGE/OF/KNOXVILLE" [ENGAGED IN THE ABOVE BATTLES], on a medal by Merriam of Boston, diameter 30mm

Note: Michael Harris Whitlock enlisted on April 5, 1863 as a Sergeant in the United States Army at age 29. By that summer he mustered into Company "D" of the Tennessee 8th Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, only to later transfer into Company "F."
Greene County was a largely Unionist pocket in Eastern Tennessee. To this day a statue stands in front of the Greeneville Courthouse, erected to honor the memory of Union soldiers from the surrounding area.
This object being offered descended through the family and is accompanied by a copious amount of Whitlock genealogy for the historian or hobbyist interested in pursuing research on the subject.Condition

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
