(New York/Massachusetts, 1906-1991)
Mercury I, 1955, signed in sculpture "Ferber/55", stamped at base of sculpture "Justrue - Patented", brass mounted on original painted wood base, 50-5/8 x 47 x 14 in.; with natural tree trunk pedestal, 38 x 12 x 12 in.
Provenance: Samuel M. Kootz Gallery, Inc. (accompanied by a facsimile of a 1961 letter of appraisal from the gallery); Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence C. Kline; by descent in family
Note: Herbert Ferber was influenced and created within the in the surroundings of European Surrealism in New York City in the 1940s, but wished not to be constrained by their ideologies. His sculptures were among the earliest Abstract Expressionist sculptural pieces then being made, much of which involved welding brass and copper, allowing him to make open sculptures described by some as "Surreal Abstraction". He was close to some of the "Irascibles" and considered himself aligned with their cause.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
