Note: "American Girl" was a standardbred racehorse born in 1862 in Peekskill. Though born "weak-jointed, loose-gaited," and "the worst-looking, crooked-legged filly that was ever foaled in Peekskill," she eventually became a well-known racer and prominent example of the breed, valued at $25,000 and winning 52 races over the course of her career. After her tragic death during a race in 1875, J.W. Fiske & Co., among other manufacturers, was inspired to create a weathervane after her image.
very fine overall condition, retains a fine richly colored verdigris surface, probable bullet hole through rider's back/shoulder, visible solder at neck, mane, tail, and joints, some separations at seams, crack and solder repair to one wheel with later crack
