The Virgin with Christ and Saint John, unsigned, collection stamp middle left edge recto "JG" (Lugt 1164a), possibly 17th century, ink and wash on paper 5-1/2 x 7-1/8 in. (14x 18.1 cm); unframed
Provenance: Ex-collection James Gibbs (1804-1891); Sotheby's Parke Bernet, 3758 (label verso); The Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia, with proceeds to fund future acquisitions
Note: Identified by the collector's stamp, book binder and collector James Gibbs' point of fame is to have compiled the 'Kitto Bible' for more than thirty years, adding some 30,000 illustrations to a Bible published in 1838, enriched with notes by John Kitto. This Bible, which a contemporary prospectus described as 'the largest and most elaborately illustrated Bible in the world', contained specimen Bibles from the 15th and 16th centuries, illuminations, nearly 3,000 original drawings and prints, including the greatest masters (Rembrandt, Dürer). It is now kept at the Huntington Library, San Marino, California.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
