probably Baltimore or Annapolis, Maryland, 1790-1810, carved and figured mahogany frame set with rosette inlaid tablet back, shaped arms and turned arm supports, rosette, leaf, and line inlaid tapered legs on casters, checkerboard inlaid D shaped skirt, pale green silk damask upholstery with loose down cushion, ash and oak seat frame, 39-1/2 x 79-1/4 x 25 in., Provenance: Thomas Schwenke Antiques, New York, purchased 1984 for $45,000 (accompanied by copy of receipt); Joan B. and James L. Loeb Estates; Note: The Thomas Schwenke receipt accompanying the sofa indicates that "I believe this to be one of the finest inlaid Hepplewhite sofas ever to be offered for public sale. The only comparable sofa is the superb Maryland sofa from the C. K. Davis collection, illustrated in American Antiques from the Israel Sack Collection, vol. V, pg. 1334.
visible frame in good condition overall, minor bumps and small repair at top edge of crest, some cracks and distress at joint of arms to arm supports, one arm with minor break and two plugged screw repairs, small patch at one upper arm, one rear leg with later pin and blocking, other possible restorations, some repairs to inlaid banding, later bracing for central legs, later casters, some typical edge wear at legs and feet with two very small patches, fine silk upholstery in generally good condition with light wear, upper frame not examined under upholstery
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
