Annapolis or Baltimore, attributed to the shop of John Shaw, 1790s, with fine black variegated marble top over a dramatically inlaid figured mahogany frame, book matched skirt centering a tablet with a neoclassical urn and goat's head inlay, legs with stylized Corinthian capitals, acanthus leaves above boldly formed bellflower chains set on inlaid spade feet 33 x 43 x 21 in.
Provenance: Important Private Virginia Estate
Note: This remarkable table represents the highest level of sophistication and development in Neoclassical Maryland. The attribution to John Shaw is supported by the distinctive diminutive inlaid spade feet that conform to other documented and attributed works by Shaw. See John Shaw: Cabinet Maker of Annapolis, The Baltimore Museum of Art, catalog #26 and #37.
very good condition, one top side molding replaced, applied strip at top of back rail appears to be original material, some very minor patches at corners of top moldings, some possible restorations at foot cuffs, (slight color variation), back of front skirt rail with some pest damage and later applied color likely to address pests, marble top with some edge roughness and minor chips with one corner loss at back. Discerning the originality of marble tops is difficult given the lack of connective tissue, in our opinion, this top appears to be original to the frame
