- Lot Description
Tall Case Clock late 18th century, dial signed Tho. Worswick of Lancaster, case attributed to Gillows, arched and painted dial with rocking naval scene, date and seconds hands, eight day brass movement, fine case with pierced broken arched pediment with carved rosettes, cluster columns, gothic arched door and ogee bracket feet, pendulum and two weights, 90 x 23 x 10-1/2 in.. Notes: Susan Stuart notes in Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 that "Thomas Worswick deserves a special place in decorative arts history, since he was the first known clockmaker in the world to use white or painted dials on his clocks." With its pierced fretwork, string inlay and gothic details, the clock offered here is very closely related to that very first example, made in 1773 and with a case supplied by Gillows. Worswick was the brother-in-law of Robert and Richard Gillow, having married Alice, daughter of Robert I and Agnes Gillow in 1756. For more on Worswick and Gillow, see Stuart, pp. 398-400.. one area of flaking on painted dial, other surface wear to paint, crack to glass in hood door, brass finial later replacement, case with typical minor surface wear and repairs, feet replaced, case and works probably a good match (see detailed photos)

In house shipping. Brunk Auctions provides in-house shipping via UPS Ground (signature required) for many items. Brunk Auctions will provide a shipping quote which includes shipping, materials, labor and insurance. Insurance is based on the selling price and premium.

Shipping arrangements are made only after the invoice is paid. The payment for shipping is a separate charge from payment of your lots.
Sales Tax: If you live in North Carolina and/or pick up from the auction house, and do not have a valid resale tax number on file with us, you MUST pay North Carolina state sales tax. The NC Sales Tax will not apply to any items being shipped out of state (unless the client resides in North Carolina) or to those clients with a resale tax number.
