Philadelphia, 1760-1780, scrolled crest rail with rope and tassel carving centering carved shell or cabochon with bellflower drop, pierced and leaf carved splat, fluted rear stiles, leaf carved knees with ball and claw feet, period slip seat with blue damask upholstery, chairs marked "VI", slip seat marked "IV", 39 x 22-3/4 x 21-1/2 in.
Note: The Winterthur Museum owns a chair nearly identical to this example, likely from the same set (see Downs, Catalog no. 124), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns an armchair of the same design that may also be from the same set (see Heckscher, catalog no. 61).

excellent condition overall, edge crack and possible repair at one rear stile near joint with seat rail, very minor crack at crest rail attachment, minor cracks and very small edge repairs at ears, probably original seat blocking
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
