New York, attributed to the shop of Duncan Phyfe, circa 1816, each with highly figured veneers throughout, banded tops opening to mahogany veneered playing surfaces, highly figured mahogany skirts with ebonized and brass inlaid lower molding, reeded barrel and ball turned supports, on leaf carved legs with lion's paw feet and brass casters, one with pale yellow paper lining to interior compartment, 30 x 36 x 18 in. and 30-1/4 x 36 x 18 in., Provenance: Christie's New York, January 2001, lot 113, sold for $25,000; Private Collection, Atlanta; Note: For a closely related Duncan Phyfe table of this form with brass inlaid and ebonized lower skirt molding and drum and ball turned supports, see Peter Kenney,ÿDuncan Phyfe: Master Cabinetmaker in New York, fig. 81. The table is documented to Duncan Phyfe and was part of the Brinckerhoff suite of furniture supplied by Phyfe in 1816. A very closely related Pembroke table was also supplied by Phyfe to the Brinckerhoffs (see plate 19).ÿ
in very good condition and closely matched, the slight height difference and difference in graining suggest they are an assembled pair, both with intact legs and feet with original casters; shorter example with chip and loss at rear corner of top and veneer chip at front edge of top, typical cracks, warping, and veneer distress to top; taller exampleÿwith some scratches and veneer distress to top, some patches and repairs to veneered banding on edges of top, much of the base retains an old possibly original finish with crazing and wear, some areas of varnish bloom
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
