Note: This rare bronze by Jannin is a portrait of Liberté, also known by the model's name of "Marianne" and a representation of the French republic. She forms the basis of the American interpretation, the Statue of Liberty. This bronze is thought to be the one that was exhibited at the Paris Universal Expostion in 1878 by Jannin. Please see Reports of U.S.Commissioners to Paris Universal Exposition, 1878. Vol. Ii: Fine Arts, Education, Wood Carving, Textile, Fabrics. [PARIS, FRANCE]: [PARIS. EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE, 1878], 1878. Page 119, "In the three halls devoted to French Sculpture, there were no less that [sic.] 389 works, executed by 189 scupltors. It will, therefore, plainly be impossible to do more than a glance at the principal ones for the limit of this paper are to restricted to do more. This large number of works and of sculptors plainly indicates, however, the warm interest thers is in France in this branch of art, and the large patronage that is given." Sales Tax: If you live in North Carolina and/or pick up from the auction house, and do not have a valid resale tax number on file with us, you MUST pay North Carolina state sales tax. The NC Sales Tax will not apply to any items being shipped out of state (unless the client resides in North Carolina) or to those clients with a resale tax number.
