2. Finish Of The Race - ?Defender? - ?Valkyrie? - 1895.
Etching
In this race ?Defender? was fouled and crippled by ?Valkyrie? Just as they were crossing the lane at the start. But even under reduced sail. ?Defender? was not quite four minutes behind at the first mark, held her own to the second mark, and was only 43 seconds behind at the finish. Although she did not cross the line first, she was declared winner of the race. These plates were begun at the time of the races in 1895, from sketches made on the spot, but I never had the courage to finish them for fear of spoiling them. However, these two are good. The ?Finish of the Race? pleases me because it?s is at once simple and delicate in line and powerful in construction. The proof you have is the first impression of the second state of the plate.
