Engagement between the United States and the Macedonian, on October 25, 1818, after painting by Thomas Birch (American, 1779-1851), signed and dated lower left "Ed.Beyer 1852", oil on canvas, 22-1/2 x 30-1/2 in.; molded and gilt composition frame, 28-1/2 x 36 in.
Provenance: Quester Gallery, Rowayton, Connecticut; Private South Carolina Collection
Note: This is an example of the popular imagery of the Engagement between the United States and the Macedonian, during the War of 1812. The battle resulted in the capture of the Macedonian, which became the first British warship to be brought to an American harbor as a prize. This work being offered is likely after one of three known views of the event by Thomas Birch, the most notable of which hung in the oval office of President John F. Kennedy. An engraving of this view by Benjamin Tanner was published on October 25, 1813. Another engraving was made by Samuel Seymour in 1815, and published by James Webster.
