Three Watercolors: The Ship Lion in a Moderate Gail, signed lower right "Darrell McClure", watercolor on paper, 17-1/2 x 22-1/2 in.; Running the Breech Inlet, signed lower right "DMcC", watercolor on illustration board, 15 x 20 in.; The Loss of Captain Spicer, signed lower right "DMcC", watercolor on illustration board, 15 x 20 in.; unframed
Provenance: Humber Family, North Carolina
Note: In 1587 John White led a party of colonists - the first to include women and children - to establish an English colony on the Atlantic coast. This group of "planters" landed on Roanoke Island, off of present day Virginia. It was soon apparent that White would need to return to England for supplies. Unfortunately he was unable to return to the aid of the colonists for three years, due to French privateering and England's war with Spain.
These three watercolors illustrate the attempt of John White to rescue the colonists at Roanoke Island in 1590. In the process he lost many of the men in an attempt to get close during a North Easterly storm. The ship of Captain Spicer was capsized and lost. The colonists were never found.
