Macchia Basket, ultramarine lip wrap, fine ultramarine horizontal lines, with "white cloud" and multi-colored glass in shades of green, red, yellow/orange, and turquoise, with red to clear interior, 1987, inscribed and signed on bottom "For Dennis/Thanks/Chihuly/Spruce Pine/1987", blown glass, 12 x 16-1/2 x 15-1/2 in.
Provenance: Gift from the artist; Private Collection
Note: In 1987, Dale Chihuly visited the studio of master glass blower Harvey Littleton in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. He worked with his team including Flora Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick (see lot 4090180) to create a series of "drawing" cylinders and other works of art. This was documented in a 1987 film with Dale Chihuly and and includes interviews with his team. On September 12, 2014, Brunk Auctions offered a piece titled Macchia Set, that was featured in this documentary (part II). It sold for $12,000. This current piece closely relates to that two piece set and was likely created the same day.See:Part I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6npip-DKNrcPart II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajADF4J_AhI
