(19th century)

Note:Ice fashions have traditionally been designed as much to bring on the boys as to stand off the chill, with agility on skates apparently an afterthought. Consider the aerodynamics of the hooped skirts of the 1860s, for example, and the necessity of a manly hand to ensure one remained upright. Fashions and flirtations are clearly the theme of many of the pictures and advertisements here, some of which hint at impending encounters between the corseted female skaters and the gentlemen behind them. Skating was the highlight of the winter social season. Prints and paintings depicting skating and the encounters the sport offered with the “fairer sex” were reproduced and circulated in magazines throughout the United States and Europe. Lloyd’s Pocket Companion and Guide Through New York City for 1866-67 warns male readers of finding love on the ice:
There is not a prettier sight in the wide world than seeing a young and pretty girl upon skates. The grace she exhibits is bewildering; many a young fellow has lost his heart, and skated himself into matrimony, on the Central Park pond.
