- Lot Description
circa 1780-1790, attributed to the workshop of Eliphalet Chapin (American, 1741–1807), spired compressed ball finials, latticework broken arch pediment with fanned roundels, batwing brasses, fluted quarter column stiles, serpentine lower case, spurred ogee bracket feet, white pine secondary, dovetailed and rosehead nail construction, 83 x 41 x 21-1/2 in.
Note: This chest-on-chest shares many of the same hallmark features of case furniture attributed to the workshop of Eliphalet Chapin, one of the most prestigious cabinetmakers of pre-Revolutionary War Connecticut. The spired compressed ball finials are identical to the finials of a high chest from a private Windsor collection illustrated in Connecticut Valley Furniture: Eliphalet Chapin and his Contemporaries, 1750-1800 by Thomas and Alice Kugelman (fig. 59). The impeccably carved latticework pediment relates to several examples documented in Connecticut Valley Furniture, including a well-known high chest conserved in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford (fig. 63, acc. 1964.146).Condition
fine state of preservation overall, restored finish, pediment with one small replaced area on proper right side, some small losses along rear side of pediment, finials in excellent condition, period replaced brasses, original feet with some tiny surface repairs, scattered typical wear and imperfections expected with age and use

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
