Spanish or Portuguese, of three part form, bow tied top connecting cruciform pendant with ribbon-like design, in original condition, back retains original double loop fitting for choker ribbon, collection of old Mine cut, rose cut, and rectangular step cut diamonds, unstamped, tests 18kt. yellow gold, 2-7/8 x 1-1/8 in., 17.3 g, with custom made leatherette case from Harvey & Gore Goldsmith, Regent St. W.
Provenance: Gift from Dr. Max Onslow-Ford to his bride, Maude Woollerton, (parents of British/American Surrealist artist Gordon Onslow-Ford (1912-2003)), on the occasion of their wedding April 9, 1912; By descent in family
Note: In the 17th century, advancements in gem cutting, especially diamonds, brought about a new jewelry style across Europe, where the gems themselves took center stage. This design, known as Lazo in Spanish and Laça in Portuguese (both referring to a bow of ribbon), was one of the most popular styles until the 18th century and remained in use with traditional costumes until the early 20th century. The pendant is originally worn on a ribbon inserted through the loops on the reverse of the jewel.
The day after Max Onslow-Ford wed Maude Woollerton, they left Southampton for their honeymoon to the West Indies, and as they departed, they witnessed the Titanic setting sail on its maiden voyage.

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
