- Lot Description
Hepplewhite Inlaid Mahogany Pembroke Table attributed to Levin Tarr (1772-1821), figured mahogany oval top with two drop leaves and double inlay and double scratch-beaded edges, above bow-front frieze ornamented with light and dark stringing, flanked by cross-banded oval inlays over tapering legs with characteristic Tarr chain of three-part Baltimore style bellflowers suspended from rope-type patterned stringing, 28-1/2 x 33 x 21 in., opens to 43 in., overall fine condition and in an old finish, minor cracks in top, old break in skirt (one where leg joins and a narrow piece of leg was spliced where it meets the apron), some restorations to foot veneer, stringing and inlay. Notes: This table relates in format to one illustrated in [American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection,] p. 158-159. For a detailed discussion of characteristics of Levin Tarr furniture, see Hurst and Prown, [Southern Furniture,] p. 247-248. A signed and dated Tarr demilune pier table with similar details is in the collections of the Maryland Historical Society.. Provenance: Old sticker at underside stating the ownership of the table in the Neilson family of Priestford, Hartford County, Maryland; Presented to G. Harvey Davis, 1928; Joe and Mary Archer Collection, sold Richard Opfer Auctions, September 26, 1998 (accompanied by photocopies from auction catalog); Millie McGehee Antiques, Riderwood, Maryland (accompanied by copy of invoice); Property of a Southern Gentlemanoverall fine condition and in an old finish, minor cracks in top, old break in skirt (one where leg joins and a narrow piece of leg was spliced where it meets the apron), some restorations to foot veneer, stringing and inlay
