(British/Wales, 1920-1992) Pienza No. 1, 1986, signed verso "Heath '86" and inscribed with title, oil on canvas, 48 x 30 in.; black stained frame, 57 x 39 in. Notes: Adrian Heath was an early proponent of geometric abstraction, with a style that seemed to be a blend of the St. Ives school and the classical abstraction prevalent in London. The new modernism obtained incredible momentum between the World Wars with the thought that art and design must be approached in a new manner. In fact, it was while imprisoned during WWII that Adrian Heath solidified his interest in abstract art. He would later write a manifesto titled, Abstract Art, its Origins and Meaning. He was greatly influenced by Ben Nicholson who had discovered the uninhibited works of Alfred Wallis, a primitive artist in St. Ives. In a note from Ricahrd Gault of Redfern Gallery he states, Pienza is a small town in Italy which the artist visited in 1986. He was inspired by the curves and shapes of the Italian countryside" which resulted in this painting His works are held by important institutions such as the British Museum, London, the Brooklyn Museum, New York, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Gallery, London. This lot is accompanied by a 2001 exhibition catalog from Redfern Gallery. This lot is accompanied by a balance receipt from the gallery, a note on gallery letterhead annd the exhibition brochure.
