attributed to Roanoke River Basin or possibly Eastern Virginia, 1750-1780, walnut with rich dark color, pierced splats and ring and baluster turned arm supports, square legs with stretchers, original yellow pine slip seat, 30-3/4 x 24-1/2 x 27-1/2 in.
Note: Very closely related chairs are illustrated in Bivins, Jr., The Furniture of Coastal North Carolina, 1700-1820, see for example pages 173, 180, and 352-353.
Provenance: Descended in a Wilson, North Carolina family
The strips at the base of the splats and the quarter round molding in front of them are replaced; one arm/hand grip is an old replacement, original stretchers, original yellow pine seat with later braces at underside (seat supports possibly replaced), finish distress and water stain to back, other typical wear, replaced strips at base. While the color and grain of the splats are a close match to the rest of the chair, they differ in design from the other known examples from the group. Finish microscopy has confirmed that the splats are old replacements.
