signed and dated 1798, probably made in Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Virginia), in a fine state of preservation, retaining its original surface and mellow old patina, with fitted desk interior centering a tambour door with distinctive theater curtain design, flanked by stop-fluted pilasters (one a document drawer), probably original baize writing surface, bolding formed original ogee bracket feet, dovetailed construction with poplar, yellow pine, and walnut secondary, 45-1/2 x 42 x 23-3/8 in.

Note: Illustrated in Elizabeth Davison, The Furniture of John Shearer 1790-1820, catalog number 11. Davison notes that this desk is one of the two earliest dated Shearer objects. It is signed in at least 5 places: the interior back of each interior small drawer "Shearer", the floor of the prospect section "John Shearer", and under the bottom "___? John Shearer 1798".
excellent condition with original mellow surface, brasses replaced (plugged center holes expertly disguised), probably original baize writing surface with stains and wear, one document drawer facing patched (very well disguised), original feet with minor cracks at some facings, other typical surface wear and flaws
Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
