set #5 of only ten issued
commemorative silver half dollars, Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco strikes, the very definition of "fresh-to-the-market" coins; along with the original cardboard holder and envelope, the numbered Capital Plastics holder, Sesquicentennial wooden nickels of "1", "2", and "5" denomination, and relevant documentation
Provenance: Chibbaro Collection
Note: On March 22, 1986 a time capsule was opened after fifty years that contained this set of three coins as well as nine other identical sets. Of the ten sets in total, one went to the McKissick Museum and another was placed into a second time capsule that will not see daylight until 2036. This leaves only eight sets that were commercially available to the public at that time in commemoration of Columbia's 200th Anniversary.
This set is complete with all issuing paperwork and accessories and has resided in early NGC holders for the past 30+ years. A remarkable set that does not show up at auction very often at all. The only relevant auction comp that we could find was a Heritage sale in 2007 where a three coin set brought over $3,400.
