ENGLAND/SCOTLAND, 1915-1997 A fine oil on canvas landscape painting by abstract artist William Gear. Titled "Paysage, Mai 50" (May Landscape, 1950) the work depicts an amalgamation of abstracted naturalistic forms in an earthly palette over a gray background. After serving in World War II, Gear lived in Paris from 1947 to 1950. During this time Gear identified himself and exhibited with CoBrA, the Northwestern Europe avant-garde movement led by Karel Appel (1921-2006), Constant (1920-2005), and Asger Jorn (1914-1973) among others. During this time period is when this painting was executed. Upon departing Paris in 1950 Gear arrived in New York to take part in a joint exhibition with Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), his only American exhibition during his life time. It was during this brief stint Gear met his wife Deborah Chertok (1920-1988) later gifting this work to her sister. The painting is a great example of the artist's work embodying his career. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner "Gear 50" and signed "Gear", annotated "13 Quai Des Grads Augustins Paris VI", titled "Paysage", and dated "Mai 50" on verso.
Canvas measures 32 1/4" by 25 5/8", framed 33" by 26 1/2"
Given by the artist to his wife Deborah Chertok's (1920-1988) sister, by descent within the Chertok family, Boston, Massachusetts. Part of four works in the sale.
The line along lower portion of painting is where artist blended two canvases together, the blended line displays as a ghostly stretcher bar type line, otherwise good original condition. Small less than 1/16" loss of paint in black area of upper middle canvas. Smaller than the tip of a ball point pen.
