MASSACHUSETTS/ CALIFORNIA, 1878-1939 A large neoclassical bronze sundial by American female sculptor Anna Coleman Ladd. The work depicts three male figures holding laurel garland encircling a Corinthian style column with an acanthus leaf base and capital. The three figures are symbolic of the stages of a man's life with a youthful but blinded boy, strong willed soldier, and aged philosopher. Ladd later became an accomplished member of the Red Cross working in Paris after World War I creating prosthetic painted masks for disfigured soldiers. Present day Ladd's "Triton Babies" is a fountain sculpture in the Boston Public Garden. The work is signed "A.LADD", marked "ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N.Y", and dated "MCMX" (1910).
From an Osterville, Massachusetts estate.
Bronze measures 41 1/2" to tip of sundial, 52 1/2" including marble base, approximately 21" wide.
The bronze retains an original untouched weathered surface, showing wonderful verdigris. The original marble with small chips and such.
