Tranquillo Cremona (Italian, 1837-1878) oil on board signed with CT monogram to bottom right; depicting a portrait of a young girl with a crown of holly and greenery and with a fringed white shawl; measures approximately 14" x 12" with gilded wooden frame and has a sight image of approximately 11-3/4" x 10"; in Good overall condition but in need of cleaning and minor restorations. Tranquillo Cremona (10 April 1837-10 June 1878) was an Italian painter who trained as a young man with Giovanni Carnovali and lived in Venice from 1852 to 1859. Cremona moved to Milan and became part of the Scapigliatura movement which was characterized by bohemian attitudes and included poets, writers, musicians and artists infused with a combination of rebellious, and later anti-academic and anarchic, tendencies. His paintings have a windswept style, lacking the linearity of Hayez and other academics and reminiscent of the Venice School and Titian. His work consisted mostly of portraits, and his subjects were often women.
