Samuel Burtis Baker (American, 1982-1967). Soft toned portrait of Peggy Cannady, cousin of the portrait's consignor & daughter of John Egerton Cannady (prominent doctor in Harrisonburg, VA. & Charleston, WV). She was the granddaughter of John Edwin (Ned) Roller, a general in the Civil War serving under R.E. Lee and later a prominent attorney a in Harrisonburg, VA. Measures approximately 50-3/8" in height with width of 38-3/8" framed, with sight image height of approximately 45-3/8" with width of 33-3/8". Signed to lower right "Baker". Samuel Burtis Baker was an instructor at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. from 1921 to 1935 (when this portrait was painted) and a painter of portraits, still life , cityscape and interiors with figures. He was born in Boston and studied with Ernest Major and Charles Davis in Mystic, CT and Edward Barnard in Belmont, MA. He opened a studio in Boston in 1910 and exhibited widely in Boston, moving to DC in 1921 to teach with Edmund Tarbell at the Corcoran and exhibited widely there. His paintings are in collections of the Cororan Gallery, the Smithsonian, the Lincoln Center Collection, the National Academy of Design
