Rene Francois Ghislain Magritte (Belgian, 1898 - 1967) unframed gouache in pastel hues on Winsor & Newton Watermark paper depicting a surrealist window view of leaves morphed into pigeons or doves. Measures 20-1/2" in height with 26" in width, signed "Magritte" to lower left. Provenance: currently from a private collection in Los Angeles, and was acquired from Mike Lopez, Sr. who inherited it from Mr. Miguel Lopez Pumajero (1892 - 1976), Ambassador and Diplomat of Columbia in the United States who originally acquired it from the Julien Levy Gallery of New York. Rene Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967) was a Surrealist painter who studied art at the Academie Royale des Beaux Arts in Brussels after the tragic loss of his mother at the tender age of fourteen. Magritte was a prolific painter, who completed over 280 works between 1926 and 1930 alone. His genius as a Surrealist visual artist was recognized by the time of his death in 1967, and his work is displayed in public and private collections throughout the world.
