- Lot Description
O.T. Bonnett (American, 1925 - 2011 ) clay bust sculpture depicting Chief Crazy Horse. Measures 19" in height with full width of 11" & full depth of 9". Complete with handmade wooden base constructed by the artist with lazy susan feature. Makers marked impressed to left side, lower left & incised "Crazy Horse Dakota" numbered A118. Felt underlining to base. All measurements are approximate. In overall good condition, chief's feather is absent & small repair to hair section on frontal lobe. Dr. O.T. Bonnett was born in Kansas on May 30, 1925, lived in Wyoming, the Midwest, & retired to New Mexico. He attended the University of Illinois where he received his M.D. degree in 1948. His expertise in anatomy was discernible in his highly realistic & expressive bust & figure work, & he sculptured for more than 60 years working in several media including metal, wood, cast stone, & stoneware clay. Critics have compared his works favorably to Mantegna, Michaelangelo, Leonardo, Remmington, & more. His work has been exhibited in galleries of Santa Fe, Sedona, Albequerque, Colorado, & Stifels Fine Art Center of Oglebay Institute in Wheeling, WV, where he taught sculpturing. Each portrait in clay is an original, hand built, & fired, with now two alike. They are also always signed with an impression of his initial with the (O) being formed by the Tai Chi symbol representing the completeness of life. Dr. Bonnett died in his home in Raton, NM on December 4, 2011.
