I Wayan Karta (Indonesian, 1961- ) oil on canvas depicting two Legong dancers in traditional garb, mounted in an open face black frame. Signed by the artist to the lower right hand corner. Frame measures 32-1/2" in height by 29" in width with the sight image measuring 30-3/4" in height by 27" in width. All measurements are approximate. I Wayan Karta (Indonesian, 1961- ) also known as Gaura Nataraja Das, was born in Padangtegal, Ubud, and started to train as a painter at the tender age of seven. Two of Balinese famous artists- I Nyoman Madya and I Wayan Atjin Tisna were his teachers and mentors. A multitalented artist he also learnt traditional music from his father I Ketut Genjet and dance from Pandita Empu Acarya Daksa. A graduate from the Indonesian Art Institute at Denpasar, he has been practicing art, while also working as a Cultural Arts teacher in the city. His compositions are colorful and rotate around mythology and folklore.
