- Lot Description
Elizabeth Gardner photogravure titled "Priscilla"; marked to top "Elizabeth Gardner", to bottom right "Priscilla", and to bottom middle "Photogravure Goupil & Co." and "D. Appleton & Co. New York"; circa 1895; measures approximately 18" x 16" with bird's eye maple frame and print itself measures approximately 15-1/2" x 12-1/2"; the condition of the framing is Poor with torn matting and a flimsy mounting but condition of print itself is Fair with some slight tearing and staining to edges. Priscilla Mullins, who crossed the Atlantic on the Mayflower, lost her parents and brother during their first winter in Plymouth, MA. She took to spinning and teaching children for the Colony. H. W. Longfellow's poem "The Courtship of Miles Standish" brings this classic love story forward. Gardner has also successfully grasped Priscilla's humility and industry in this handsome print. Photogravure is an intaglio printmaking or photo-mechanical process whereby a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatin tissue which had been exposed to a film positive, and
