Berthold Hellingrath framed etching depicting a riverside village; pencil signed to bottom right corner and marked "60" to bottom left; German cardboard plaque to back reads "Hellingrath"; measures approximately 17-1/4" x 20-3/8" with gilded frame and has a sight image of approximately 11-7/8" x 15-1/2". Berthold Hellingrath studied from 1899-1905 at the Dresden Art Academy and was a master student of Gotthardt Kuehl. From 1907 he had his own studio in Dresden, where he was acquainted with Erich Heckel, founder of the artists' group "Die Brücke" (1905), and with Max Pechstein. He also traveled frequently to the Baltic Sea and often stayed on in Gdansk. In 1925 he became a lecturer in architectural painting theory of proportion and freehand drawing for civil engineers, etc. at the Technische Hochschule Hannover. In 1928 he was appointed honorary professor there. He died in 1954 as the result of a traffic accident.
