Renowned as an ornithologist par excellence, naturalist John J Audubon (1785 - 1851) left America one of its finest artistic treasures in his seminal The Birds of America, a multi-year subscription publication which documented the birds native to the United States.
The specimen we present is the Long-billed Curlew, published in 1834 as a hand colored aquatint print featuring a male and female bird in a marshy environ against the backdrop of the growing and vibrant Charleston, South Carolina.
This double elephant folio print shows the grand sweep of the city along the river, with a close-up view of the birds who are the star attractions. The beauty of the birds and the natural colors enables this print to grace a variety of spaces, but as the centerpiece of a dining room or living room mantle, it commands easy understated attention.
