This exceptional coin silver sugar caddy or basket is equal of Tiffany or any other reputed maker of silver. The gilt oval bowl is decorated with repousse leaves, vines, and grapes, the rim swagged with leaf capped extremeties. The openwork hinged handle is a masterpiece of sturdy delicacy. The oval foot with its applied vine and leaf decoration raises the elegant body with refined grace. Monogrammed with C and inscribed 1859.
This gem was created by Jones, Shreve, Brown and Company of Boston, a firm engaged in the sale of luxury items. It operated at No 226 Washington St and 1 Summer Street, doing business from 1855 - 1860. The piece is marked by the maker. This firm eventually became Shreve, Crump, and Low in 1869. The short duration of this firm's operations makes this piece quite rare and desirable.
