- Lot Description
Hand colored daguerreotype depicts two seated men, the one on the right thought to be John Wise. Known as the Father of American Ballooning, Wise made his first ascension in 1835 and completed a total of 446 free balloon ascensions. He competed for Chief Aeronaut of the soon to be established Union Army Balloon Corps during the Civil War. The use of his balloon was unfortunately thwarted prior to the First Battle of Bull Run by an accident involving Major Albert Myer and men from the 26th Pennsylvania Volunteers while the balloon was being moved towards the battlefield and became entangled in trees. This hand tinted image is thought to depict Wise, seated with a companion. This image of the pioneer of early flight was part of a collection of early aeronautical historical memorabilia that also included images now held by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Housed in an incomplete leather case. Approx. 2-1/4' x 2-3/4" visible. This item can be shipped in house.
