ROBERT MAXWELL
Unique wall sculpture, 2004
Glazed stoneware. Studio-made, Ramona Convent Secondary School, Alhambra, CA.
Incised "R. Maxwell '04".
19.75" H x 29.75" W
Provenance: The Estate of Robert Maxwell
While most of Maxwell’s output took the form of tabletop or utilitarian objects, he created an extremely small number of wall-mounted sculptures, each of them unique. The sunset is depicted through melted glass fragments added to the glaze, a nod to earlier wall-mounted works Maxwell created with incorporated glass elements. During his Venice studio days, lacking access to proper glass materials, Maxwell collected discarded bottles from a nearby liquor store, and incorporated a limited color palette into his works: Thunderbird green, and Coors brown, by melting the glass into an ashtray. In the present lot, Maxwell used Blenko glass fragments, affording him a wider range of colors, befitting the sky motif.
