Thomas Sully
(Am. 1783–1872)
Portrait of a Young Woman, 1867
Oil on canvas, framed
Dated and inscribed ""Copied from Julien, TS 1837, March" verso
20 3/4" x 14 7/8" actual, 27 3/8" x 21 7/8" framed
Other Notes: Presumably #2531, titled Reflection, in the Thomas Sully ledger. This lot is accompanied by restoration documentation its listing in the Thomas Sully ledger
Good appearance. Period frame has been re-gilded as likely not original to the painting. The painting has been restored within the last 20-30 years. The composition has been reduced slightly along all edges and some of the original painted canvas folded over the tacking edge likely to fit a smaller frame. The canvas is lined onto mylar (likely to allow for continued visibility of the back of the canvas).. The Artist's inscription, monogram, and date are visible through the mylar on the verso but are difficult to decipher with the current backing. Old stretcher bars have been converted into tension bold stretchers. Retouch is clearly visible under ultraviolet light to th right of the figures hand, scattered along the upper and lower edges, in figure's shoulders and to the right of her nose. UV images and video available upon request.
