- Lot Description
French Aubusson verdure wool tapestry, 18th c., depicting birds in a lush landscape, a chateaux in the distance, bordered on three sides with flower-filled urns, later linen lining, approx 99.5"h, 115"w
Condition
10.6.24-In my opinion, the fibers are slightly brittle, and the tapestry displays fading and tonal variation in the dyes commensurate with age and exposure from display. I note there are multiple areas of restoration, including stitched repairs and sections of later reweaving. The tapestry is missing the border along the bottom edge with sections of woven trim securing the ends of the left and right sides of the remaining border. Inherent to the weaving technique, there are slits at color transitions - some of these are stitched closed while others remain open. The tapestry arrived to us folded, and some creasing/ fold lines persist. I also observed that the tapestry is slightly "off square," so the measurements may vary by a few inches depending on where you measure. As listed, there is a later linen lining/ backing. I am not an expert on such tapestries so please do let me know should you have further questions
