French Aubusson verdure wool tapestry, 18th c., depicting a bird in a lush landscape, later linen lining, approx 93"h, 68"w
12.7.24-In my opinion regarding: 3193-The tapestry is intact with restorations, including stitched repairs and sections of later reweaving. The tapestry displays some overall fading, discoloration, and tonal variation in the dyes commensurate with age and light exposure. The original, more vibrant tones of the wools can be observed from the open sections on the back of the tapestry. In my opinion, the tapestry was likely cut/ reduced. As a result, there are pieced sections in the border and areas where the pattern is not continuous. The bands of solid color weaving in the border may be later additions. In the central panel, there are areas of total loss to the weft threads, resulting in open holes. The linen lining is partially visible through some of these holes. Inherent to the weaving technique, there are slits at color transitions - some of these are stitched closed while others remain open. The tapestry arrived to us folded and some creasing/ fold lines persist. I also observed that the tapestry is slightly "off square," so the measurements may vary by a few inches depending on where you measure. As listed, there is a later linen lining/ backing.n We are not experts on textiles, please let me know if you have further questions
The tapestry came to us out of an estate in France
