John G. Kellogg was highly skilled in coin minting, as he worked previously for private mints. As the economy enlarged from the gold rush, Kellogg became the most trusted private mint as far as correct weight and purity. The restrike example was originally only struck as a proof. The sinking of the S.S. Central America, filled with gold coins and bullion from California, sunk in September 1857. Salvaged gold from the wreckage was used to strike these special proofs. Actual gold weight is 2.419 troy ounces.
