Struck as proof only, mintage 1541. By 1878 trade dollars were flowing back from china, into general circulation. While having the largest grain amount of silver in any US dollar coin, they were very unpopular, trading at a discount. From 1879 to 1885, examples were only struck as proof at the Philadelphia mint. They were demonetized in 1887, and redeemed for other coinage. Proofs have worked their way into circulation, as an unknown amount were returned to the mint. Proof 64 is the beginning of investment quality for proof trade dollars.
