A heavy long barreled 19th century rifle, bearing a back action lock signed H. Elwell warranted. Most probably Henry, was a Pennsylvania gunsmith, noted for late flint type locks and percussion locks, rather then complete firearms. The stock exhibits a "Dutchman" in the wood at the lock area. This most likely is a conversion from flint to percussion. There are some illegible markings on the top barrel flat near the breech plug.Rifle features set triggers. It is safe to say that Mr. Elwell or some other smith performed the conversion. Approximately .50 caliber, 45 â…" long barrel, 1 3/16" across the flats, low profile front sight and adjustable rear. Brass forend cap, three ferrules, trigger guard, swing down patchbox, crescent butt plate with extension along the toe. Nice full length tiger striping on the stock with cheekpiece. Appears barrel was fitted with a false muzzle at one time.
Condition
