Gorham sterling plate with dancers and musicians in relief around the scalloped rim; engraved "William Merritt Chase, Jr. from his Godfather, S.M.D. May 1891. Weighs 8.025 troy ounces. Star within a circle on the verso is for 1888, the year of manufacture. The design in relief appears to be a pattern called "Piper". Provenance: from the collection of a gentlemen, Chicago, IL. From the Estate of William Merritt Chase, famous American painter, who also founded an Art school that bore his name. This dish was gifted to a son of the artist - William Merritt Jr., on the celebration of his first birthday. He would die less then a month after the celebration. The infant was interred at Green-Wood cemetery Brooklyn, New York, on July 6, 1891.

Good, minor surface wear, minor dents, black oxidation in undercuts of the design.
