French Model 1822 Light Cavalry Sword. The blade is etched on the .375†edge near the ricasso with - M"re d'Armes de Chât"t Avril 1874 = Cav"rie S"re M"le 1822. The etching indicates the sword was manufactured in April of 1874 at the French Arsenal in the city Châtellerault in west central France. The sword serial number is 3163 and the scabbard is 3469. There are hallmarks on the blade at the ricasso as well as at the serial number. The leather bumper, wrap, and handle wire are original to the blade. The patina to the scabbard and sword are period perfect. There are dings on the blade along with period sharpening marks, indicating some usage, and two minor dings on the upper scabbard. The scabbard retains approximately 50% of the original paint. The manufacturing date and use marks would likely indicate usage during the French conquest of Tunisia in 1881.
